Rebecco Ann Tess (geb. 1980 in Annweiler am Trifels, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) setzt sich mit Ausbeutungs- und Herrschaftsstrukturen in den Städten, in der Natur und dem menschlichen Körper in globalen Zusammenhängen auseinander.

In Heilbronn wird Tess die bereits 2012 begonnene fotografische Serie »Alpha++ Models« präsentieren und zugleich fortführen. Ausgangspunkt sind Global Cities wie Dubai, Hongkong, London, New York, Seoul, Shanghai oder Singapur.

Die Bilder nehmen dabei die Ästhetik der ökonomischen Zentren auf. Die Perspektive und der Maßstab wechseln schnell, von Luftaufnahmen der Innenstadt Dubais über akribisch gebaute Modelle futuristischer Planstädte im Informationszentrum der Smart City Songdo bis hin zu zweidimensionalen Versprechungen noch nicht realisierter Luxuswohnungen auf gigantischen Plakatwänden in Hongkong. Die goldverspiegelten Glas- und Metallfassaden teilen sich den urbanen Raum mit verschiedenen Formen der Natur, die sich in geometrische Strukturen einfügt, mal als grüne Wand oder als akkurat gestutzte Hecke. An den Rändern der geplanten Städte mündet bisweilen ein fein gesäumter Weg plötzlich im Gestrüpp. Oder die unbeschrifteten Straßenschilder der Smart City weisen als leere Platzhalter in die unbekannte Zukunft. Hier und da tauchen Fragmente menschlicher Körper auf, die in der Kulisse zwischen sich wiederholenden Wohn- und Bürohochhäusern deplatziert wirken. Die städtischen Aufnahmen sind gerahmt von Yachthäfen und schnellen Motoryachten, die unter verschiedenen Flaggen fahren, oft unter denen von Steueroasen. Die engen Grenzen der Nationalstaaten scheinen plötzlich aufgeweicht. Die Boote als Fahrzeuge des Meeres werden hier zu symbolischen Verbindungen der geografisch weit entfernten Orte. Das Meer ist Bindeglied verschiedener Orte der Welt und das nicht nur durch einen scheinbar unaufhaltsamen Kapitalismus. Fortgeführt wird »Alpha++ Models« seit 2024 u. a. von der Serie »Expanding Landscape«. Hier konzentriert sich die Künstler*in auf die Beobachtung von Landschaften und Infrastrukturen, untersucht die grundlegenden menschlichen Bedürfnisse nach Wasser, Nahrung, Energie, Transport und Erholung und beschäftigt sich mit deren Auswirkungen. Dabei wird auch thematisiert, ob und wie sich die Menschheit mehr und mehr auf eine posthumane virtuelle Identität verlagert, und wie sich die extensive Nutzung physischer Ressourcen beschleunigt und ihre verheerenden Auswirkungen auf weite Gebiete verdeutlicht.

Rebecco Ann Tess findet dabei in den Arbeiten einen faszinierenden und für die künstlerische Thematik äußerst schlüssigen Grad zwischen anziehender Bildästhetik und kühler Distanz.

Rebecco Ann Tess (b. 1980 in Annweiler am Trifels, lives and works in Berlin) explores structures of exploitation and authority in cities, in nature, and in the human body in a global context.

In Heilbronn, Tess will present the photographic series »Alpha++ Models«, initially started in 2012, and further develop it. The point of departure for this series are global cities such as Dubai, Hong Kong, London, New York, Seoul, Shanghai, and Singapore.

The images have absorbed the aesthetics of the economic centers. The perspective and scale alter quickly, from aerial photographs of downtown Dubai to meticulously built models of futuristic planned cities at the information center of the smart city Songdo, to the two-dimensional promises on gigantic billboards in Hong Kong of luxury apartments that have yet to be built. The golden-tinted glass and metal facades share the urban space with various forms of nature, which blends into geometric structures, at times as a green wall and elsewhere as an accurately trimmed hedge. At the fringes of the planned cities, a path lined with delicate greenery might suddenly end in tangled undergrowth. And unlabeled street signs in the smart city point the way to an as-yet unknown future as empty placeholders. Fragments of human bodies appear here and there, seemingly out of place amidst the backdrop of recurring residential and office high-rises. The urban images are framed by marinas and fast motor yachts sailing under various flags, many of them from tax havens. The tight borders of the nation states suddenly seem to have been penetrable. The boats, as vehicles of the sea, have come to symbolize the connecting links between places that are geographically far apart. The sea is a connecting element between different places in the world, and not just through an apparently unstoppable capitalism. »Alpha++ Models« has been carried forward since 2024, by the series »Expanding Landscape«, among others. Here, the artist focuses on the observation of landscapes and infrastructures, examining the basic human needs for water, food, energy, transportation, and recreation, while also addressing related implications. The focus is also on whether and how humanity is increasingly shifting toward a posthuman virtual identity, how the extensive use of physical resources is accelerating as well as their devastating effects on large areas.

Rebecco Ann Tess succeeds in striking, in terms of the artistic subject matter, extremely coherent balance between appealing visual aesthetics and reserved distinctness.
