Birgit Werres (*1962 in Stommeln, lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf) kann zaubern. Ihr gelingt es, einen einfachen Draht in eine geschwungene Linie im Raum zu verwandeln, ein Knäuel aus Spanngurten im dynamischen und komplexen Miteinander aus Formen, Farben und Texturen eines Baumwollnetzes zu vereinigen. Verspielt und streng entfalten ihre Arbeiten eine Dynamik im Raum, die mit der Bewegungsfülle des Barocks genauso umschrieben werden kann wie mit einer minimalistischen Entscheidung, die auf alles Unnötige verzichten will und auf die Möglichkeiten des Materials vertraut.

Seit den 1990er-Jahren durchstreift die Künstlerin Straßen, Baustellen, industrielle Brachen, Fabriken und Fertigungsanlagen auf der Suche nach Materialien für ihre Skulpturen und Wandobjekte. Früher waren diese Anlagen noch ein Eldorado der Materialbeschaffung. Heute, in Zeiten des Recyclings, gleichen sie mitunter Hochsicherheitstrakten, wie die Künstlerin erst kürzlich im Gespräch bemerkte. Denn Recycling ganz anderer Art betreibt sie: Metalle, Kunststoffe, Behälter, Draht und undefinierbares „Zeug“, das alles findet Eingang in ihre Arbeit im Atelier. Es sind sprechende Relikte aus der Produktion, Reste, die Spuren von Benutzung tragen, minimalistisch wie schön, die Birgit Werres zu Objekten im Raum zusammenfügt. Das trägt eine Geschichte in sich und wird zugleich zum Objekt, das einen neuen Platz einnimmt.

Birgit Werres (*1962 in Stommeln, lives and works in Düsseldorf) can do magic. She manages to transform a simple wire into a sweeping line in space, to unite a ball of tension belts in the dynamic and complex interplay of forms, colors and textures of a cotton net. Playful and austere, her works unfold a dynamic in the space, which may be described by the fullness of movement of the Baroque just as much as by a minimalist decision that seeks to dispense with everything unnecessary and trusts in the potential of the material. Since the 1990s, the artist has been roaming the streets, construction sites, industrial wastelands, factories and production facilities in search of materials for her sculptures and wall objects. In the past, these facilities were still an El Dorado for the procurement of materials. Today, in times of recycling, they sometimes resemble high-security precincts, as the artist recently remarked in conversation. For she practices recycling of an entirely different kind: Metals, plastics, containers, wire and indefinable “stuff”, all of this finds its way into her work in the studio. These are telling relics from production, remnants that bear traces of use, minimalist as well as beautiful, that Birgit Werres assembles into objects in space. It carries a story within itself and at the same time becomes an object that assumes a new position.
